At the manufacturing site in Chennai expansion works for two additional production halls including a 7.5-megawatt test bench for wind turbine gearboxes have now been completed. Investments at the Kharagpur site in new buildings, machines and heat treatment are still on-going and expected to be completed in late 2023. Flender’s production capacities in India will then sum up to roundabout 38,000 square meters. The expansion is part of Flender's strategic localization plans for the Indian market that also include technology, product portfolio and supply chain. Further investments are planned for the upcoming years.

With the new buildings and infrastructure, the yearly production capacity for wind turbine drives out of India will significantly increase. “Systems competence is our strength. This is reflected in our investment in India which also includes an enhanced manufacturing portfolio for wind turbine generators and couplings. With the new setup for our Winergy brand as system supplier, we are now the only manufacturer in the wind market that combines the expertise for gearboxes, generators, couplings, direct-drive-segments and digital solutions under one roof,” says Martin Sasse, Vice President Sales Winergy.

“The Indian subcontinent is currently the global wind energy powerhouse. We are more than happy about this development, as it substantially supports the global energy transition on the way to reach the Paris agreement’s 1.5 degree Celsius goal. We are proud to contribute to a sustainable future. Investing in production capacities around the globe is the necessary step to reach this goal,” says Andreas Evertz, CEO of Flender Group.

The new buildings allow for streamlined production processes for all product segments. Especially, assembly and logistics of large on- and offshore gear units is enhanced by additional heavy duty crane capacities that make heavy material handling possible. The new facilities also include new high rack storage and washing and painting booths for parts and gear units.

“Our production output in India has already boosted in this year. This investment will help us further grow our footprint and lays the foundation for sustainable local growth. It is also a commitment to the community and for creating jobs here in India,” says Vinod Shetty, CEO of Flender India.

Since their foundations in 1982 (Kharagpur) und 2005 (Chennai) the production sites in India have become Flender’s technology and production hub for the region.
