Dirk Orlowsky elected President of EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers)

Dr Dirk Orlowsky has been elected as the new President of EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers) which is an international non-profit society. Its objectives are to promote the development and application of geosciences and related engineering subjects, to promote innovation and technical progress and to foster the communication, fellowship and cooperation between those working in, studying or otherwise being interested in these fields

Dirk is currently a senior geoscientist and project manager with DMT GROUP, responsible for the exploration of raw materials, the geophysical/geological description of deposits, exploration of near-surface subsoils in infrastructure projects, and for the adaptation and
application of special investigation methods in the field of repository mining. Dirk’s election to President of EAGE follows his role as Vice President of EAGE, for which he was proposed in June 2019 and took office in June 2020.

As President, his work will focus on transforming EAGE via a 5-year strategy that prioritises globalization and multi-disciplinary activities; membership and careers; create a one-stop-shop for knowledge resource and transfer; attracting support from the broader geosciences
industry; achieving recognition within the European Union; and furthering understanding and engagement from the public. Dirk will also play a central role shaping EAGE into a ‘global society’ as one of the most innovative science associations worldwide, embracing energy
transition as a new business and featuring digital innovation prominently.

On his appointment, Dirk said: I am very honoured to have been elected President of EAGE and look forward to building on and furthering the work I have started as Vice President. My appointment to this role not only comes at a crucial time for EAGE, but also for the oil and gas industry and thus for geosciences as a whole. While we must stay true to our mission as a partner to deep and near-surface geosciences, we must also embrace – and show leadership around – the energy transition to which many of our members are currently adapting. I believe that EAGE can be one of the most innovative and trusted societies for geosciences worldwide, and look forward to seeing this vision take shape over the next 5 years.’

Dirk’s role as President will be led alongside additional volunteering roles, including Board Membership of the German Geophysical Society (DGG), joint-organizer of 2014 Near Surface annual meeting, co-chair of the GET2020 event, and member of the scientific advisory
committee of the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics in Hannover (LIAG).
