Cuba – Wind energy research program extended to 8 provinces

project includes the setting up of six 50-meter high towers in localities of the island's northern coasts

Cuba has extended its wind energy research program to eight provinces in order to evaluate local potential for possible power generation. The project, aimed at further enhancing the National Power System, includes the setting up of six 50-meter high towers in localities of the island's northern coasts, which bear wind gauges measuring the wind force every 10 seconds. Alexander Leiva, head of a wind farm in Turiguano Island, north of Ciego de Avila province, told acn that the towers were raised on areas where the wind blows at over eight meters per second.

Other Cuban territories where the project is being implemented are western Pinar del Rio, the Isle of Youth, central Villa Clara and eastern Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin and Guantanamo. If research studies yield positive results, new power generators will be set up in those areas, said the executive. Experts with the project have identified more than 500 sites in central eastern Ciego de Avila province with potential to exploit alternative energy sources like the wind, the sun and biomass in the benefit of local towns and communities.

Other projects include the setting up of windmills in farms and agricultural facilities, to supply water to over 80 percent of animal herds. Research studies on the local wind potential are part of the national energy program, known as the Energy Revolution, which kicked off on the island two years ago. The initiative prioritizes the saving and efficient use of energy and the exploration of alternative energy sources in face of skyrocketing oil prices at the international market.
