Green Lights for the Vientos Patagónicos Wind Farm in Southern Chile

Spanish company Elecnor will install the 10 MW Vientos Patagónicos wind farm

Spanish company Elecnor has won the contract to build a wind farm in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region of Chile, around 20 km north of the city of Punta Arenas (Cabo Negro) which claims to be one of the most souhtern cities of the world.

The Vientos Patagónicos wind farm cosst USD 22 million and will consist of three 69-metre turbines, each with a capacity of 3.45 MW, which will add just over 10 MW to the Regional Electricity System. The turbines, in line with industry standards, will have an estimated lifespan of 20 years.

Construction of the plant, on an EPC basis, will commence in the first quarter of 2019 and is slated to conclude at the end of the same year. According to ENAP, "this new project will contribute to the desired diversification of the energy matrix of Magallanes, enabling it to increase its use of renewable energy from 2% to 20%".
