EDS HV Group Completes Scope of Work on Innovative Battery Storage Project for Vattenfall
The battery@pyc project is the, largest battery installation to date for Vattenfall, the Swedish energy group and is co-located with Pen y Cymoedd (PYC) wind farm. Connecting to its 33kV switchboard, the entire site can produce +/-22 MW for 15 minutes to provide enhanced frequency response and will be in continuous operation 365 days a year. Cold commissioning and energisation was completed in late April.
EDS were responsible for the electrical design review and grid consultancy of this project, providing a key role is what was a complex design for Vattenfall to meet the challenges of a project of this type. EDS produced the design and specification for the protection and operation of the 33kV switchboard, as well as undertaking the cable rating calculations on the Principal Contractor’s behalf. EDS also provided HV authorised staff, commissioning support and oversaw testing.
Luke Bishop, EDS’s Principal Engineer was there to witness proceedings and provide expert advice on key technical issues. He said: “EDS welcomed the opportunity to play a key role in this innovative Battery Storage Project. The complexities of the project meant that we had to provide some very clever engineering solutions. We are pleased to have made such an important contribution to a project that is so ground breaking within the industry”
