Norwegian-Finnish Border Area Gets Wind Farms

Norwegian company St1 Norge AS has agreed to set up a joint venture with a consortium of Vindkraft Nord AS and Ny Energi AS to develop two wind farm projects in northern Norway.

The joint venture is named Grenselandet AS and will will focus on the development work and the environmental impact assessment at first, which is expected to take up to 3 years. Based on the results of this process further steps will be carried out.

The two planning areas have a total production capacity of 900 MW, the Davvi wind farm is to be 700 MW and the Borealis wind farm 200 MW. The region is located directly on the border with Finland and is said to have the best wind conditions in all of Norway. The electricity is to be fed into the grids of both countries.

“The project will strengthen the central grid eastwards, and thereby secure a supply of renewable energy for the region. The project will provide Finnmark with the opportunity to contribute to the national emissions target by exploiting their good wind conditions”, says Harald Dirdal, Project Manager at Grenselandet. In addition, the project will help to attract energy-intensive industries on the ground and create further jobs.

It is the first project in Norway to be developed without government subsidies.
