EWEC 2006 : Untapped wind potential in Greece

Greece is one of thewindiest and yet least exploited countries in the Mediterranean. However, with a new influx of overseas developers, a new renewable energy law(intended to streamline and simplify regulations) to be announced in the nearfuture and long standing grid reinforcements underway the unfulfilledpotential could soon be realised. 573 MW have been installed by the end of2005 (100MW of new capacity in 2005). More than 500 MW of new projects arenow fully permitted and over 3100 MW have been granted initial generationlicenses.

"After yearsof delays Greece now hasgot to realise its potential to be one of the leading wind energy countriesin Europe by 2010. By the beginning of 2000,Greecehad only 170 MW of wind capacity installed and has only just recently passed the500 MW mark. According to governmentprojections, at least 2800 MW of wind installations will be needed in thenext five years to meet the European directive target.

We at HWEA strongly believe that we have what it takes to meet this goal andask the government to rise to the challenge. In the process it would not just underline the success of thetechnology in Greecebut make an important contribution to the battle against climatechange."
