The construction of the Baltic Sea wind farm Wikinger in Germany is running at full speed. Currently, the piles and foundations for the turbines are put into water and the substation is expected to arrive at the construction site later this month.

Yesterday the topping out ceremony for the company building was celebrated at the Mukran Port (formerly Sassnitz port). Starting next year, Iberdrola will monitor the 70 wind turbines installed in the Baltic Sea from that building. The importance of the new offshore wind farm in the region was stressed by the attendance of the Minister of Energy of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Christian Pegel.
Pegel said: "This is a good day for the economy of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With the relocation of the operational building for the Wikinger project to Sassnitz, Iberdrola gets into action and thus sets the stage for plenty of secure and long-term jobs in the region. The energy transition is a huge opportunity for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. That this is not just an empty promise, is clearly visible at this point. I now hope that the construction of the wind farm itself and the company buildings proceed with equal timeliness, thus producing clean energy in the Baltic Sea from next year and contributing sustainable energy for Germany. "

Jürgen Blume, CEO of Iberdrola Renovables Offshore Germany GmbH, also emphasized the importance of the wind farm: "We have always stressed that we do not only want to build and operate a wind farm in the Baltic Sea, but see ourselves as part of the region. The commitment of the team and the professionalism of the partners and the competent authorities have made it possible to keep to the schedule date. "

In operation from 2017, the 350-megawatt offshore wind farm will produce clean electricity for more than 350,000 households, which represents more than 20 percent of the total annual consumption in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
