Wind Industry Profile of

India: Gamesa secures several orders

The company will supply 62 of its G114-2.0 MW Class S turbines at two wind farms in the state of Karnataka / It will also build two wind farms, with capacity of 50 MW and 24 MW, in the states of Rajasthan, under EPC contracts

Gamesa, a global technology leader in wind energy, continues to consolidate its leadership position in the Indian wind power market - having emerged as the number one OEM for the third year running in 2015- with four new orders for the supply of 198 MW in total.

The first contract encompasses the supply of 50 G114-2.0 MW Class S (100 MW) turbines at a wind farm located in the Indian state of Karnataka (slated for commissioning in March 2017), while the second covers the supply of 12 turbines of the same make (24 MW) at another facility in the same state (slated for commissioning in the middle of this year).

Gamesa recently signed its first order for the supply of its G114-2.0 MW Class S turbine in India for 184 MW in total; the Indian pipeline for this product has now been increased by 124 MW. The G114-2.0 MW, the order intake for which reached nearly 2 GW in 2015 globally, has a sweep area 38% greater than that of the G97-2.0 MW and produces up to 20% more energy per annum.

Elsewhere, the company also secured another two contracts for the turnkey construction of two wind farms in the state of Rajasthan: one project with capacity of 50 MW, where Gamesa will install 25 of its G97-2.0 MW turbines, and another one with capacity of 24 MW, equipped with 12 of its G97-2.0 MW Class S turbines. As these are EPC contracts, the company will also handle all of the infrastructure needed to install and operate the facilities. Both projects are due for commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Gamesa has designed the G114-2.0 MW Class S and G97-2.0 MW Class S turbines, with tower heights of 106 and 104 metres, respectively, specifically for the Indian market so as to maximise turbine performance at low wind speed sites.

Gamesa in India

Gamesa has consolidated its position as the leading OEM in India for the third year running, further increasing the gap with respect to the number-two player, lifting its market share from 25% in 2014 to 34% in 2015, according to the report recently released by MAKE Consultancy. As for the market's potential, MAKE is forecasting 30 MW of new wind power capacity additions in this market by 2025, driven the country's growing energy requirement.

Gamesa has been present in India - as technology provider and wind farm developer - since 2009, where it had installed close to 2,600 MW by the end of 2015. Last year, India accounted for 29% of the company's total sales volume.
