Malawi: SgurrEnergy installs four SgurrMetMasts

SgurrEnergy returns to Malawi for wind measurement project

SgurrEnergy will return to Malawi for the installation and operation of four SgurrMetMasts, as part of a two year project to measure wind energy for the Malawi Ministry of Energy.

SgurrEnergy, a Wood Group company, will erect and operate the 80m guyed lattice tower masts at four different sites in Malawi for the wind measurement campaign which is expected to be completed in 2017.

The SgurrMetMasts will be manufactured in South Africa and installed by SgurrEnergy’s specialist team.

The project follows on from SgurrEnergy’s first milestone project in Malawi in 2014 where the Glasgow-based company successfully installed two met masts in the country as part of the wider Malawi Renewable Energy Acceleration Programme (MREAP).

SgurrEnergy’s Measurement Team Leader, Iain Gillespie, said: “This is a significant project for Malawi as it moves towards renewable energy development, laying the ground work for four potential wind farms spread across the country. One of our company aims is to support and promote clean, secure and economically viable renewable energy development internationally, so we are delighted to be returning to Malawi. This is another large project that SgurrEnergy is undertaking in the country and we’re looking forward to building on the work we’ve already carried out in the region”.

SgurrEnergy is also involved in the development of hydro energy in Malawi, managing the Powering Development in Mulanje Project on behalf of the Scottish Government. Based in the Mulanje region of Malawi, SgurrEnergy is advising on a micro-hydro project aiming to improve the electricity supply to local communities.

Furthermore, SgurrEnergy’s presence in Africa continues to increase with solar projects in Mozambique, Angola, Egypt and Senegal, and energy yield studies in South Africa.
