Germany: 15 years of Deutsche WindGuard

Starting off with the idea to support operators in optimizing their wind farms as one of the first manufacturer independent technical managers, CEOs Gerhard Gerdes, Dr. Knud Rehfeldt and Axel Albers founded the company in 2000. From there Deutsche WindGuard soon became a successful independent consultant with a comprehensive portfolio covering the whole lifecycle of wind energy projects.

„Since the very beginnings of Deutsche WindGuard, we constantly accompanied the development of the wind energy market and adapted our services to the requirements of the market”, explains Dr. Knud Rehfeldt, “Aside from the area of technical inspections and management, we soon also established a significant consulting business, the testing laboratory for the measurement of wind turbines as well as the site assessment division.” His colleague Gerhard Gerdes adds: “By now we have our own wind tunnel centre specifically designed for the wind industry with seven different wind tunnels, furthermore a company for the offshore-market and an independent certification body.”

“We are looking back on some very successful years”, says Axel Albers, “Starting out with only three people, we have developed into a group of eight companies with more than 150 employees at five locations. By now we have calibrated more than 100,000 anemometers; we have supported all amendments to the Renewable Energies Act as a consultant, and have issued energy yield assessments for more than 20 GW of wind power.”

Looking back on 15 successful years, WindGuard is well positioned for the future: “Wind energy plays a significant role in any energy concept of the future” Knud Rehfeldt is sure of that and adds: “We are convinced that a safe, responsible, cost effective, and long-term energy supply lies with renewable energy. However, development occurs at a rapid pace and it is an exciting task to come up with convincing solutions to the many new challenges. Thanks to our longstanding experience, the great synergy effects in our service spectrum, and our market sensing, we will continue our commitment on the worldwide wind energy market.”
