IBERDROLA has acquired from Gamesa the project for the construction of the Dos Arbolitos wind farm in Mexico, which will have an installed capacity of 70 megawatts (MW) and be located in the town of Juchitán de Zaragoza, in the State of Oaxaca.

The Dos Arbolitos complex is expected to come into operation in 2014 and will increase IBERDROLA’s wind power capacity in Mexico to 278 MW, becoming the country’s fourth renewable energy facility.

Thanks to this capacity, IBERDROLA will be able to supply electricity to nearly 150,000 Mexican homes and will avoid the emission into the atmosphere of around 560,000 tons of CO2 a year.

The project for the construction of the Dos Arbolitos wind farm is located in Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the windiest areas in the world. The farm will include 35 Gamesa wind turbines with 2 MW capacity each.

All IBERDROLA wind farms in Mexico use Gamesa technology, making this company its main supplier worldwide. IBERDROLA is leading the development of new renewable energy facilities in Mexico, where it already has three wind farms in operation: La Ventosa (80 MW), La Venta III (102 MW) and Bii Nee Stipa (26 MW).

IBERDROLA is the global leader within the sector of renewable energy in terms of both installed capacity, with over 14,000 MW at the end of 2012, and electricity output, with nearly 31,800 million kilowatt-hours generated last year.

Mexico is one of IBERDROLA’s strategic countries, where it is a benchmark electricity operator. It has been present in this country since 1998, where it has invested around 2.7 billion dollars.

In addition to its pioneering development of renewable energy, IBERDROLA is the leading independent power producer in Mexico, where it already produces around 14.5% of all the electricity, and has become a key player in the improvement and expansion of the electric power transmission infrastructures.

With 770 employees in Mexico, IBERDROLA has an installed capacity of 5,200 megawatts (MW), mainly through combined cycle gas plants (4,987 MW): Tamazunchale (1,135 MW), Golfo (1,121 MW), Monterrey (1,040 MW), Altamira (1,036 MW), La Laguna (535 MW) and Enertek (120 MW).
