The plan was presented to members of its European Works Forum. The restructuring is necessary to adapt to the “profound crisis” in the wind energy sector in Spain, according to the company.

Citing an economic crisis and absence of a stable regulatory framework slowing down internal demand as well as limited exports to other markets because of local production requirements and global overcapacity, the company said the changes the changes will help its wind power energy business in Spain adapt to “the new market reality” and guarantee its future sustainability.

The company will be closing its As Somozas (Coruña) plant and its Zamora plant. Electrical equipment production of the As Somozas plant will be moved to the Buñuel (Navarra) plant. The Zamora plant is currently used to manufacture towers.

The company’s central offices in Spain will also be affected, but Alstom said Spain will continue to be “the knowledge base and technical development center for Alstom Wind.” The company also confirmed its commitment to strengthen its global research and development center in Barcelona.
