India - India Wind Energy Outlook sees multifold growth in wind power

Wind energy generation capacity in India could more than quadruple to 89 Gigawatts by 2020 against 18 GW now, according to the India Wind Energy Outlook 2012

The third edition of this report was released by Minister for New and
Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah at the inaugural of the Wind Power
India 2012 conference and exhibition today.

The expansion in capacity will attract investments of over $16.5
billion, create 1.79 lakh jobs and save 131 million tonnes of carbon
dioxide. By 2030 the capacity could grow to 191 GW.

But there are challenges that the Government needs to address. There is
a need for a renewable energy law, incentives for re-powering --
replacing smaller wind turbines with larger units -- and creating a
National Mission for Wind to give the sector support from financial
institutions.

The report is brought out by Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers
Association, World Institute of Sustainable Energy and the Global Wind
Energy Council, organisers of the conference.
