Wind Industry Profile of

Pepperl+Fuchs present the offshore encoder RHI90 in The Windfair Newsletter

Due to the better wind conditions more and more wind turbines are installed in the see or near the coast. This has consequences for sensors, which must cope with aggravated environmental circumstances.

Mannheim, 27.06.2012. Quite often a combination of offshore and cold climate requirements is requested. This means operating temperatures of -40 °C as well as salt water and corrosion resistance are important topics. Additionally to that an improved electro-magnetic compatibility is demanded.

The reason for this is mainly found in the need for increased reliability and availability, because maintenance on see is costly and sometimes even impossible because of weather conditions. The new offshore encoder RHI90 of Pepperl+Fuchs delivers precisely 2048 incremental signals and is mounted via a 16 mm hollow shaft. The construction guarantees that there is no slip between the encoder and the application side. It completely meets the strong requirements for salt water resistance, as well as the electro-magnet compatibility.

The housing of the encoder has undergone severe testing to make sure that the corresponding standards were fulfilled. For the installation in the nacelle it is rated IP65. The calculated life-time meets the actual state of the art value of 20 years of operation within a temperature range from -40°C to +70°C.
