Cyprus - Gamesa inaugurates one more wind farm

The Agia Anna Wind Energy plant will have a power capacity of 20 MW. It will be equipped with ten wind turbines Gamesa G90 of 2 MW each

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoclis Sylikiotis said Friday that the government of Cyprus will cover more than 13% of its energy needs, by 2020, through renewable energy sources.

The Minister, who inaugurated Friday the Wind Farm at the Agia Anna area in the Larnaka District, recalled that the Council of Ministers has recently approved a series of measures regarding renewable energy sources, noting that this has paved the way for the use of photovoltaics and biomass.

One of the government's goals, he added, is to cover 13% of the island's energy needs with renewable energy sources by 2020.

''We will go far beyond that goal'', he stressed, explaining that this will be possible through the government's new plans as regards energy from photovoltaic power that will be used both in households and for commercial purposes as well as energy power in photovoltaic parks.

The Agia Anna Wind Farm will have a power capacity of 20 ΜW. It will be equipped with ten wind turbines Gamesa G90 of 2 MW each.

The cost of the project was 32 million euro.

The Wind Farm will produce annually 31.000.000 kWh. As a result, 25,000 tones of carbon dioxide will be economized each year. The Wind Park will cover the annual needs of 5.000 households.

Cyprus ranks sixth in the EU as regards energy produced by wind energy.

The inauguration ceremony was attended among others by Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Sophocles Aletraris, the Ambassador of Spain in Nicosia, former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides and Members of the Parliament.
