How can I find out if my site is qualified for a small wind turbine? - By wind monitoring!

Even aerodynamic experts cannot say reliably how a wind shaded area around an obstacle looks like just by looking at it. Wind maps and Micro-Scale-Simulations do not provide enough information on this issue either.

Gusty winds and turbulence can affect the energy yield of a small wind turbine considerably. Our recommendation: Monitor the wind at your site with a wind monitoring system before you install a small wind turbine.
Using our aeolog compact wind monitoring system, these measurements become simple and cost effective:
Buy an aeolog or hire an aeolog from your wind turbine distributor.

The aeolog is sent in a reusable wooden box.

If you decide to rent the aeolog, the process looks like this:

a) The aeolog is sent to you by a parcel service
b) You erect the system consulting the manual (with a little aptitude in approx. 45 minutes)
c) After the end of e.g. a 3 months rental period, you just send back the aeolog to the lender
d) We or the lender analyze the wind data for you. You get a report about the wind data at your site

We recommend extrapolating the data to one year in order to cover seasonal variations in wind conditions and derive the annual energy yield of your wind turbine. Therefore, we need the following data from you:

1. A suitable time series of wind data of a nearby weather station covering one year of wind data as well as the aeolog measuring period
2. The power curve of the wind turbine
3. The exact coordinates of the measurement site

With the resulting energy yield and production patterns of a small wind turbine, an economic profitability analysis can be conducted and a decision in favor of or against a small wind turbine at your site can be taken.

The aeolog is especially designed for the small wind sector and is reusable over and over again. If needed replacement parts are delivered by INENSUS quickly and cost effectively.

The aeolog includes all necessary equipment including mast, logger and sensors. Our standard types are of 10 m and 15 m height. The new aeolog 3 data logger provides more specific small wind functions and increased robustness. The wind data is written to an internal storage in terms of time series, which can be transferred to an SD card delivered with the aeolog. As an option you can add a solar sensor to measure the solar irradiation.

The 10m aeolog comes with one wind speed and wind direction sensor, whereas the 15m aeolog has got two wind speed sensors to measure speed at two different heights. This is especially advantageous at sites with obstacles as you can observe at which height you can minimize shadow effects.
INENSUS manufactures several hundreds of these systems per year mainly for the German small wind market, as well as for European and off-shore markets. The system is well-proven in different climate zones.

Ask your small wind turbine merchant about an aeolog wind measurement before you decide on installing a small wind turbine. If you are in Germany you can also rent an aeolog compact wind monitoring system directly at INENSUS.
