SIEMENS Energy Sector Renewable Energy Division: Siemens secures order for fifth offshore wind power plant in Germany

Borkum Riffgrund 1 will provide clean energy for approximately 330,000 households

Erlangen, Germany, February 24, 2011: Siemens Energy has secured another order for an offshore wind power plant in Germany. For the customer DONG Energy the company will supply up to 89 wind turbines for the Borkum Riffgrund 1 project in the North Sea off the German coast. With a total capacity of 320 megawatts (MW) the wind power plant will supply approximately 330,000 German households with clean electricity.

The Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind power plant will be located in the North Sea about 80 kilometers northwest of Emden and 55 kilometers off the German coast. Siemens will be responsible for supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines over an area of 36 square kilometers and at water depths of as much as 29 meters. Each turbine has a capacity of 3.6 MW and a rotor diameter of 120 meters. In addition, Siemens signed a five-year service, maintenance, and warranty agreement for the units with an extension option. Construction work is expected to start in 2013 with first power production in 2014.

“The first wind power project in German waters for DONG Energy, the world’s leading operator of offshore wind farms, clearly shows that offshore wind power is now also gaining momentum in Germany,” said René Umlauft, CEO of the Siemens Renewable Energy Division. “This order confirms that Siemens is not only the world number one in offshore business but is also at the forefront in Germany, too. Siemens is, however, not only successful with offshore wind turbines but is also posting growth in onshore wind power business. In fiscal 2010, onshore wind power business accounted for more than 60 percent of our revenue,” added Umlauft.

After EnBW Baltic 1 (48 MW), EnBW Baltic 2 (288 MW), Borkum Riffgat (108 MW) and Dan-Tysk (288 MW), Borkum Riffgrund 1 is the fifth order for the construction of an offshore wind power plant for Siemens in Germany. In the last 20 years, Siemens has installed more than 500 wind turbines in European waters, which are all running reliably and successfully.

Wind power is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2010, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR28 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 270 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of the megacities Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore.
