Africa- Wind farm in Antsiranana, Madagascar

Goal is to provide the entire island, which is located in the Indian Ocean, with power from wind turbines of the highest quality

The wind farm is a first step in a larger program: The goal is to provide the entire island, which is located in the Indian Ocean, with power from wind turbines of the highest quality.

In Madagascar, power is currently produced through the combustion of diesel and oil, which leads to CO2 emissions and heavy local air pollution.

In Mozambique, Energy Minister Salvador Namburete has revealed a joint wind power project with Italian investors to implement a wind farm in Matutuine district. The wind farm has the capacity to produce more than 20 MW of power.

In the north of Madagascar, a wind farm is being constructed. This contributes to stabilizing the local energy supply, creating new employment possibilities, and improving the water and air quality on the island.

The energy supply in the city and the surrounding area of Antsiranana, in northern Madagascar, is very unstable. The high oil and electricity prices have strongly increased the demand for firewood and charcoal, which puts the local forest stands in danger.

In Madagascar, electricity has until now been produced above all through the combustion of diesel or petroleum, which, in addition to CO2 emissions, also leads to strong local air pollution.

That is why the local organization Mad'Eole plans to construct Madagascar's first wind farm with a wind power capacity of 1.2 MW, which will be connected to the local power supply system.

Through the project, it is possible on the one hand to counter the scarcity in the energy supply, and on the other hand, to produce climate-neutral and renewable power through the building of the wind farm in Ramena (ca. 25 km from Antisarana). The wind farm will include six wind turbines with a capacity of 200 kW each.

The wind farm is a first step in a larger program: The goal is to provide the entire island, which is located in the Indian Ocean, with power from wind turbines of the highest quality, and that the production of these wind turbines will take place largely in the region. This makes the project in Ramena the starting signal for a technology transfer.

Each wind turbine will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 300 tons of CO2 per year, which leads to a total reduction of 12,530 tons of CO2 in the first seven years.
