Puerto Rico - Bacardi starts using wind energy
Rum distiller Bacardi Corp. announced the launch Wednesday of the largest wind turbine installation in Puerto Rico at its facility near San Juan.
Bacardi installed two 250-kilowatt wind turbines at its global rum distiller near San Juan. The wind turbines are expected to provide Bacardi with as much as 7 percent of its annual energy needs, the company said.
Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno said the installation was a sign of Bacardi's environmental stewardship.
"Puerto Rico relies on fossil fuels for virtually all its energy, so we hope other companies will follow this great leadership by Bacardi to use wind energy and other renewable energy sources," he said.
Combined, the two wind turbines will offset more than 900 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Bacardi uses all of the power generated from the wind turbines through a deal with Puerto Rico's Aspenall Energies, which owns and operates the turbines.
