Vestas receives order for 99 MW in India
Vestas receives order for 99 MW in India Vestas has received an order for 60 units of the V82-1.65 MW wind turbine for a wind power project located in Theni in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India.
The order has been placed by CLP, who is one of Vestas' long-term global customers, with installations in both China and Australia. In India, CLP currently owns and operates 100 MW of wind power and has around 245 MW under construction in the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. In addition, the company is operating a wholly owned gas-fired combined cycle power station with a capacity of 655 MW and is building a 1,320 MW domestic coal-fired power project at Jhajjar in Haryana, India.
The contract comprises supply and commissioning of the turbines, a VestasOnline® Business SCADA system as well as a 10-year service and maintenance agreement.
“This exciting project in Theni is a major step forward for Vestas in India. We are thrilled that CLP has chosen Vestas as their wind energy solution provider to help CLP realise their own renewable energy ambitions. This project award is recognition of Vestas' long-standing reputation for
capability, innovation and competitive strength in this significant wind energy market,” says Vestas Asia Pacific's President, Sean Sutton.
Vestas has been active in India for more than 10 years, and as per 30 June 2009, Vestas had installed more than 2,100 MW of wind power in India.
“To receive this order in challenging times shows the confidence that our customers have in our products, technology and the business case certainty that we offer,” adds Managing Director of Vestas India, Arvind Kaul.
“As the largest foreign investor in the Indian power sector, CLP has a long-term commitment to providing power to support the social and economic development of India in an environmentally responsible manner. The Theni plant not only adds to our current renewable portfolio of 350 MW of wind power in the country, but also underpins our contribution to the CLP Group's Climate Vision 2050 which outlines an interim target of reaching 20 per cent of the Group's generating capacity from non-carbon emitting generation across Asia Pacific by 2020. We see tremendous opportunities in the renewable energy sector in India and view our partnership with Vestas as a key milestone for both companies,” said Rajiv Mishra, Managing Director - India, CLP.
Shipment of the turbines is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2009 with expected commissioning to take place in January 2010.
