UK - Microgeneration wind turbine to be installed at prison
A microgeneration wind turbine will help to power the kitchens of a prison on the Isle of Wight. The 19-metre turbine at Parkhurst Prison has the capacity to generate 15 kilowatts of electricity, reports the Isle of Wight County Press. Using a wind turbine will help the prison reduce its dependence on electricity from the grid, thereby lowering its energy bills.
A spokesman for the Prison Service told the publication: "As part of the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions, the new kitchen facility at Parkhurst includes a wind turbine to provide an element of renewable energy. "It will go online in the summer and should bring financial benefits, as any excess energy generated will be sold back to the national grid."
The microgeneration wind turbine could become more profitable when feed-in tariffs are introduced next year. Feed-in tariffs are above-market payments per unit of electricity sold to the grid by renewable microgeneration devices.
