Tunisia - Country set to become top wind power producer in Africa by 2009
Soon, the Cap Bon wind turbines will be emulated by three other plants situated North of Tunisia, near Bizerta. The plants whose works should be completed by 2009, will produce some 120 MW of electricity, enabling the country to save 134,000 tons of petrol, and prevent the pollution by 330,000 tons of gas.
The boosting of Tunisia’s wind power potential, should bring the country’s total clean power production to some 180 MW by 2009. The planned energy production should reach 200MW by 2009, making it the top producer of energy from wind power in Africa.
Along side the Tunisian gas and electricity company (STEG), private producers will also set up wind turbines in the near future. Studies indicate that Tunisia has the potential to generate more than 1000 MW from wind energy, according to UNDP.
