Latest Wind Energy Data for Europe: Autumn 2024
Published on 12 September 2024
The 5 Key Findings:
Europe installed 6.4 GW of new wind power capacity in the first half of 2024 (gross installations). Onshore wind made up 83% of the newly added capacity for a total of 5.3 GW. The EU-27 added 5.7 GW of the capacity added in Europe over the same period.
The EU is expected to build on average 22 GW of new wind farms annually from 2024 to 2030 but needs to build 33 GW annually to meet its 2030 climate and energy targets. This would take the EU to 350 GW by 2030. The EU 2030 target is 425 GW. We expect Europe's total installed wind power capacity to exceed 450 GW by 2030.
Europe ordered 9.4 GW of new wind turbines in H1 2024. This was 11% up on H1 2023. The 9.4 GW breaks down 7.4 GW onshore and 2.1 GW offshore.
Europe took €15.4bn of final investment decisions (FIDs) in new wind farms in H1 2024. This is less than 30% of the total investment in 2023. There were only three investments in offshore wind farms in the first half of 2024.
Europe’s governments awarded 19.7 GW of new wind capacity in auctions in H1 2024: 6.5 GW onshore and 13.2 GW offshore. This is already 72% of what they auctioned in the whole of 2023.
