USA - Business man invests billions in wind energy
T. Boone Pickens, the renowned oil investor and chairman of BP Capital LLC, announced Monday that he is investing in wind energy during this oil crisis.
Pickens is investing billions of dollars into the wind energy farm in Texas, which is is likely to become the biggest in the world, producing enough power for the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.
Pickens said the farm has 1,000 megawatts, but he is urging to make it produce 4,000 megawatts by 2015. A megawatt is one million watts.
Pickens said that winergy, the term for building wind energy farms, has researched as a legitimate alternate form of energy, but he is taking the first step to making it a national priority.
"The Department of Energy came out with a study in April of '07 that said we could generate 20 percent of our electricity from wind," said Pickens. "And the wind power is -- you know, it's clean, it's renewable. It's -- you know, it's everything you want. And it's a stable supply of energy."
"[The wind farm] will be located in [the] central part of the United States, which will be the best from a safety standpoint to be located," said Pickens. "You have a wind corridor that goes from Pampa, Texas, to the Canadian border."
