World Wind Energy Conference celebrates Ontario Government Support
KINGSTON, ON (Wednesday May 21, 2008) - The Honourable John Gerretsen, Ontario Minister of the Environment and Member of Provincial Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, presented the 7th World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC2008) with $100,000 in sponsorship support on behalf of the Government of Ontario.
The announcement took place on Friday May 16th at Energy House, a renewable power installation on the St. Lawrence College campus, where WWEC2008 will take place June 24 – 26 2008. On hand to receive the funding on behalf of the WWEC2008 was conference Co-Chair and SLC Past-President Volker Thomsen and Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA) Executive Director Kristopher Stevens. Kingston Mayor Harvey Rosen also participated in the event.
“On behalf of the government of Ontario, I’m pleased to welcome the World Wind Energy Conference 2008 to Kingston,” said Minister Gerretsen. “I encourage everyone to come out to the conference in June and drop by our Ontario booth to see the steps the Ontario government is taking to address climate change and help secure a brighter future for our families,” he added.
Event host Kristopher Stevens enthused, “On behalf of our 1500 members, OSEA is excited to welcome and co-host the world in Kingston for this auspicious event. The conference theme “Energy Autonomy for Local Economies” is a fantastic opportunity to bring together the private sector, international governments and engaged citizens who want to contribute to a green energy future.”
Volker Thomsen expressed his gratitude to the Government of Ontario and all sponsors and underlines that a World Wind Energy Conference with a focus on Community Power will bring a new dimension and perspective to community development, economic growth and relief to the environment.
Stefan Gsänger, Secretary General of the World Wind Energy Association, added “It is the first time that the WWEC takes place under this special theme of Community Power. We are delighted about the strong support from the Ontario government which underlines that this is a topic of highest relevance for the accelerated deployment of inexhaustible and clean wind energy. Delegates from 40 countries look forward to experience the Canadian hospitality.”
Funding for WWEC2008 is a multi-Ministerial effort by the Government of Ontario, including the Ministries of Environment, Natural Resources, Energy, Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs, Aboriginal Affairs, Economic Development and Trade, Northern Development and Mines, Research and Innovation, Municipal Affairs and Housing, and Education among others.
About the World Wind Energy Conference 2008: The Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA) in partnership with the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), St. Lawrence College (SLC) and supported, amongst others, by the Government of Ontario, UNESCO and the German Ministry for Environment, presents the North American debut of the 7th World Wind Energy Conference “Community Power: Energy Autonomy for Local Economies”, in Kingston Ontario, on June 24 - 26 2008.
Confirmed keynote speakers include internationally renowned speakers Dr. David Suzuki and Dr. Hermann Scheer, Ontario Ministers the Hon. John Gerretsen (Environment), Donna Cansfield (Natural Resources), and Leona Dombrowsky (OMAFRA), German Deputy Environment Minister Matthias Machnig and WWEA President Dr. Anil Kane. Core programming includes presentations on technology advances, policy innovation, governance, stakeholder engagement, as well as a Community Power workshop series. A Trade Show, Gala Dinner and Education & Job Fair round out the WWEC 2008 schedule.
