Siemens to supply 140 wind turbines for the world's largest offshore wind farm Greater Gabbard

Siemens Energy has received an order for the supply of 140 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6 megawatts (MW) each. They will be delivered to the future world's largest offshore wind farm Greater Gabbard located 25 kilometers off the coast of Suffolk in Great Britain. The order also includes a five year service and warranty agreement. The purchaser is Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Ltd, owned by Scottish and Southern Energy plc (SSE). The delivery of these turbines is scheduled in 2009 and 2010. The order volume for Siemens Energy is approximately EUR800 million.

Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm will be the first UK offshore wind farm to be built outside territorial waters. It will produce electricity with a maximum capacity of 500 MW, and will provide green electrical power for more than 415,000 homes. The wind turbines of type SWT-3.6-107 will be mounted on steel monopiles, in water with depths between 24 and 34 meters.

"Siemens is delighted to have signed this prestigious order with SSE as this marks a major milestone in the offshore business for Siemens as the clear market leader in the offshore wind energy business," said René Umlauft, CEO of the Siemens’ Division Renewable Energy.

"The UK wants to respond to climate change and become more self-sufficient in energy, so it makes sense to exploit the excellent resource that UK offshore wind represents. On completion, Greater Gabbard will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world and gives SSE the opportunity to build a significant share of the UK's offshore wind market and reinforce our position as the country's leading generator of electricity from renewable sources," said Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of SSE.
