USA - NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. appoints new President and CEO of NaiKun Wind Generation Inc.
NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael J. O'Connor as President and CEO of NaiKun Wind Generation Inc. NaiKun Wind Generation Inc. is jointly owned by NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. and ENMAX, a major Alberta utility with generation assets in British Columbia and Alberta.
The company also announced Jack E. Scott as Vice-President of Commercial Operations for NaiKun Wind Development Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc., effective today.
NaiKun is proposing to build Canada's first offshore wind project in Hecate Strait off the north coast of British Columbia. The 320-megawatt project is currently under development for submission in BC Hydro's 2008 Clean Energy Call.
"We are excited to have Michael O'Connor head up the construction of our generation facilities," said Michael C. Burns, Chairman of NaiKun Wind Energy Group. "He has a strong background in the development, construction and operation of large projects, including Vancouver's first Skytrain system, a light rail transit line. Mr. O'Connor has successfully delivered several complex, ground-breaking projects within tight timeframes and on budget. His engineering and construction experience as well as his familiarity with Crown Corporations, make him ideally suited to lead the construction phase of Canada's first offshore wind project."
Currently, Mr. O'Connor is Project Director for the Canada Line Rapid Transit Project with SNC-Lavalin. He is responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of the $1.7-billion transit project before the 2010 Winter Olympics. Mr. O'Connor will remain Canada Line Project Director for the next several months as he makes the transition to NaiKun Wind Generation Inc.
Mr. O'Connor previously served as President and CEO of BC Transit. Prior to his work with SNC-Lavalin, he owned and operated Clearwater Technologies Inc., a developer and manufacturer of water and wastewater plant and distribution systems. He built the business to serve clients across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Africa and Europe. Clearwater Technologies was later purchased by Terasen Utility Services; where Mr. O'Connor served as Vice-President Operations and Manufacturing.
He said, "This is a great time to join NaiKun. The company has assembled an impressive team of industry leaders and has put together a bid advisory committee with extensive experience in the BC Hydro procurement process. As NaiKun prepares its bid submission, it is important for the Generation company to take an active role in the project's design and construction plan."
Mr. O'Connor said he sees a parallel between Canada's offshore wind-energy industry today and light rail in 1986. "In the mid-eighties, light rail was a proven and reliable mode of transportation in Europe but was just beginning to be developed in Canada. The situation with offshore wind power today is similar: It is a proven and reliable source of energy in Europe and we are just now realizing its huge potential in Canada."
Mr. O'Connor will also serve as Senior Vice-President of NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc.
As Vice-President of Commercial Operations for NaiKun Wind Development Inc., Jack E. Scott brings a formidable background in strategy and operations, bid management, investment valuation, international market analysis and development.
Most recently, he served as Vice-President of Corporate Development at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) where he was responsible for developing partnerships within the nuclear energy industry. Prior to AECL, Mr. Scott spent ten years developing major infrastructure projects and technology businesses worldwide at Canadian multinational engineering and construction company AGRA Inc., now AMEC Inc.
"Mr. Scott has an impressive reputation in business development, bid management and financial structuring in the technology and energy sectors," said Michael Burns. "He has extensive experience with contract negotiations and productive partnerships. We are extremely fortunate to add his expertise to the company."
Mr. O'Connor and Mr. Scott are the latest senior executives appointed at NaiKun. Other recent appointments include:
- Paul Taylor, President of NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc.
- Steven Eckert, President and CEO of NaiKun Wind Development Inc.
- Matt Burns, President of NaiKun Wind Operation Inc.
