Siemens Gamesa and GE court for contract in New York
Siemens Gamesa has announced its intention to build a large production facility for offshore nacelles in New York State. Prerequisite: the authorities of the state of New York select the company's wind turbines in their third offshore wind tender. This means New York is now spoilt for choice, as GE Renewable Energy has also announced such a move.
Siemens Gamesa's planned facility would be located in the Port of Coeymans and would create up to 420 direct jobs.
Siemens Gamesa would also commit to locating several new subcontracting operations as part of the award, including for the production of steel components, bearings and composite components. This could help double the number of jobs created by the plant.
New York plans to distribute contracts for a total of 9 GW of offshore wind energy in various tenders to meet the United States' goal of 30 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.
“The announcement of this proposed facility in New York is a major step forward in our desire to lead the massive U.S. offshore wind market. We’re excited by the opportunity presented by the State of New York to further develop our manufacturing footprint. We have a solid history in delivering on our commitments across the globe, including the establishment of offshore wind-focused plants in Denmark, France, Germany, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. The numerous economic, employment, and environmental benefits that offshore wind presents are enhanced by solid policies and frameworks, which are critical for financial success,” said Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business.
The planned New York facility and supplier network would provide components for all Siemens Gamesa offshore wind projects along the U.S. East Coast.
