Good news: After almost two years of undersubscribed auctions the latest auction was the second consecutive that was oversubscribed.

The German Energy Regulator (Bundesnetzagentur) has announced the results of Germany’s latest onshore wind auction. After almost two years of undersubscribed auctions it was the second consecutive auction that was oversubscribed. And that’s not the only good news for onshore wind in Germany. The permitting numbers are up. And the new Government wants to scale up the build-out of new onshore wind.

In its latest onshore wind auction the Bundesnetzagentur this week awarded 1,300 MW of new capacity. They had received 147 bids totalling 1,350 MW. This follows their last auction in September 2021 which was also (slightly) oversubscribed. The average winning price in this auction was €57.6/MWh, just below the price ceiling of €58.8/MWh. This comes after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and various acts of sabotage to energy infrastructure in the Baltic Sea have created new security concerns. The signatories commit to deter possible malign activities against offshore and underwater infrastructure within NATO and EU.

The EU built 17 GW of new wind energy in 2023, slightly up on 2022 – and more than ever in a single year in fact. But it’s not enough to reach the EU’s 2030 targets. The EU should be building 30 GW of new wind every year between now and 2030. The actions set out in the EU Wind Power Package and European Wind Charter will help increase the annual build-out – national implementation is key. Wind was 19% of all electricity produced in Europe’s last year.

Landinfra Energy AB ("Landinfra") and Eiffel Investment Group via its managed investment funds Eiffel Infrastructure Vertes and Eiffel Transition Infrastructure ("Eiffel"), a leading French asset manager, have entered into an agreement to jointly develop a pipeline of up to 1800 MW of renewable energy projects in Sweden consisting of solar power, wind power and energy storage projects. As part of the agreement Eiffel acquires 50% of the portfolio from Landinfra, who will retain the remaining 50%.
