RES unveils new monitoring control room for assets across the globe
From Neilston near Glasgow to Murra Wurra in Australia, more than 150 renewable energy developments across the world – around 2.5GW of capacity – will now be monitored from the state-of-the-art control room at RES’ offices in Scotland. The capacity controlled is expected to rise to 4GW by the end of 2021.
RES spent two years planning the £400,000 redesign, of which six months was spent studying control rooms from the energy industry for best practice. And while managing energy generated by the weather, the site uses cloud technology to enable remote and on-site access to crucial monitoring and control info – key to enabling smooth operations in a post-COVID reality.
Charles McLuckie, Control Centre Manager at RES, said: “RES and Scotland have decades of experience in renewable energy and it’s a proud moment that the expertise honed in Glasgow over this time is now being exported across the world 24/7/365. With approximately 5,000 calls per month to handle at the centre from right across our international assets, getting the design and layout right was absolutely key to ensuring our projects continue operating safely day and night. The feedback from those who have used the room so far is great – everyone is enjoying the enhanced functionality, logistical layout and the ability to more effectively monitor a greater number of projects."
The control centre is the hub for global monitoring and offers five key services:
Additional capabilities will also be added as RES continues to grow alongside a booming renewables industry.
