Canada - Manitoba Hydro Receives Wind Proposals
Bob Brennan, Manitoba Hydro President & CEO advises that 17 potential developers have submitted competing proposals to sell new wind generated electricity to Manitoba Hydro. Several of the potential developers submitted multiple proposals involving different capacities, different sites and other features, resulting in a total of 84 separate proposals.
The proposed wind farm capacities range from 25.5 megawatts (MW) to 300 MW with locations spread throughout southern Manitoba.
In March 2007 Manitoba Hydro issued a Request for Proposals for the purchase of up to 300 MW of wind generated electricity. Deadline for proposals was July 17.
A 300 MW wind farm would involve a capital investment in excess of $600 million and generate enough electricity each year to satisfy the requirements of about 90,000 natural gas-heated houses.
Manitoba Hydro is now reviewing and evaluating the proposals. Mr. Brennan said "Assessing this number of proposals thoroughly and fairly is obviously a major undertaking. We expect to complete this work within a couple of months and decide on the next steps towards the continued development of this clean, self-renewing energy source in Manitoba."
