Siemens receives order for offshore wind farm in Great Britain

Siemens Power Generation (PG) will supply 25 offshore wind turbines with a combined capacity of 90 megawatts (MW) to the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm off the Wales coast. Purchaser is RWE npower plc, the UK arm of RWE AG. The construction of the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm is scheduled to be completed by mid 2009.

Siemens PG will install and commission 25 of its SWT-3.6-107 type turbines and will also assume responsibility for service and maintenance for an initial period of five years. Once operational, Rhyl Flats, along with its neighbor North Hoyle will produce enough clean electricity to meet the needs of over 100,000 homes. The Rhyl Flats project is located west of the Burbo Offshore Wind Farm, where Siemens has just finished erection of another 25 wind turbines, likewise with a capacity of 3.6 MW each. Following commissioning and connection to the power grid the Burbo project will start commercial operation by the end of this year.

"This order strengthens our position as the leading supplier of offshore wind turbines for the European market," said Andreas Nauen, head of Siemens PG Wind Power division. "The Rhyl Flats Wind Farm is already the fourth offshore project Siemens is realizing in Great Britain and we are particularly proud that our technology is making a steadily growing contribution towards the implementation of an environmentally friendly, reliable power supply."

Malcolm Wicks MP, Minister for Energy at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, said: "Offshore wind farms can make a real contribution to the UK's renewable electricity targets and we want to see more of them. We backed Rhyl Flats with a GBP10 million capital grant and we set out measures in the recent Energy White Paper that will provide even more support to developers through the Renewables Obligation."
