Wind Industry Profile of
Offshore Ranking: Belgium Overtakes Denmark
World market leader remains the UK with 10,428 MW, followed by Germany with 7,659 MW and China with around 7,000 MW. Denmark followed in 4th place until May 2020 with 1,703 MW, but is now replaced by Belgium with 1,775 MW.
According to industry hub Belgian Offshore Platform (BOP), 1.8 million households can be supplied with green electricity from offshore wind energy. Comparing the national installed capacity with the number of inhabitants, Belgium is in third place after Denmark and the UK: Belgium has 0.156 kW offshore wind capacity per inhabitant, while the UK has 0.158 kW.
By the end of 2020, when the largest wind farm in the Belgian North Sea, SeaMade, will be fully operational, Belgium will have an installed capacity of 2,262 MW and an electricity production equivalent to the consumption of 2.2 million households.
