Wind Industry Profile of

Vestas with a Flood of Orders at the End of Q2

The Danish turbine manufacturer and world market leader attracted attention at the end of the second quarter with a veritable flood of new orders. These include major orders from two countries and several premieres.

Traditionally at Vestas, things get hectic at the press office at the end of a quarter. The company reported nine new orders on the last three days of June alone. Two countries stand out: Vestas received orders worth 947 megawatts from the US and orders worth 554 megawatts from Brazil.

In Brazil, the orders partly underline the success of a very specific turbine, because Vestas is breaking the 2 gigawatt milestone with the V150-4.2 MW turbine - only nine months after this variant made its debut in the country in the first place. The turbines are produced locally, create jobs, expand the Brazilian wind energy industry and thus support the government's initiative to promote renewable energies and a more sustainable energy mix, according to the company.

“We are really proud to achieve this 2 GW milestone in such a record time, which underlines the V150-4.2 MW turbine’s excellent fit with Brazil’s wind conditions and its unparalleled levelised cost of energy. Reaching this goal with our trusted customer EDF underlines our strong partnership in Brazil and we look forward to taking the next steps forward together”, states Rogerio S. Zampronha, Vestas managing director for Brazil and Southern LATAM.

Vestas also have reason to be pleased in view of the other premieres to be celebrated: for the first time ever they received an order from El Salvador. Vestas will supply the country's first commercial wind farm with 15 V136-3.45 MW turbines.

Meanwhile, the 4 MW platform will debut in China, where Vestas received an order for 11 MW. “We intend to bring our global expertise in developing wind energy solutions for local power grids to China to support our customers business case in distributed wind projects, demonstrating our long-term commitment to the market.” Says Thomas Keller, President of Vestas China. “This order underlines the strong fit and versatility of Vestas’ powerful 4 MW platform and how Vestas’ flexible product portfolio enables new wind projects”.

In China, wind power projects are increasingly subject to complex grid and environmental requirements, as the areas are often very densely populated.

This is not a problem in Finland. Vestas received its first order from Finland for the supply of EnVentus turbines - the V162-5.6 MW are the largest turbines in the onshore product portfolio and are to be used by long-standing customer TuuliWatti in the Simo Sarvisuo 151 MW wind farm.

The project comes from the first Finnish renewable energy auction. In order to further maximise the wind farm's electricity production, Vestas has also developed a tower solution to lift the larger rotor onshore to 166 m hub height so that the turbines can absorb new wind resources at higher and more uniform wind speeds.
