Starting Signal for Changhua Offshore Wind Farm

The Jan De Nul-Hitachi consortium has started preparatory work for the Changhua offshore wind farm in Taiwan. In a first construction phase, the cables will be laid ashore to connect the existing onshore transformer station to the onshore cable interface. To this end, the cables will be laid in channels in an underground section of 13 kilometers.

This work alone will take 20 months and will be carried out by the Taiwanese subcontractor Star Energy Corporation. The connecting underwater cable will be installed in the course of 2020. That is how long it will take for the first wind turbines to be installed in the water. Trial operation is planned for summer 2020, before the 21 5.2 MW offshore wind turbines go into full operation at the end of the same year. The special feature of this wind farm is that the foundations and wind turbines are designed to withstand typhoons and strong winds as well as earthquake loads.
