Province of Friesland Gets Involved in Wind Farm Project

The local government of the province of Friesland in the Netherlands has agreed with the developer of the wind farm Fryslân on a financial participation. It is the first time a province is directly involved in a wind farm.

If the district council agrees, the agreement will be signed in mid-May. The provincial government will contribute a maximum of €127 million and thus does not hold the majority of the wind farm. Nevertheless, a certain amount of control over deposits from tax money is to be kept.

"From and for Friesland"

The aim of the project is to promote the ambitions of the local government to make life in the surrounding villages more sustainable, including economy and tourism. The revenue generated in the long term from the investment is to be invested in an environmental fund and will also benefit the region.

Sander de Rouwe from the regional government is satisfied with the agreement: "We will invest the income in the economy of the Friesland region. Participation in this project is in line with our ambition to achieve 16% renewable energy in Friesland in 2020. "

The Fryslân wind farm is built in the northern part of the IJsselmeer and consists of 89 turbines with a total output of 320 MW arranged in a cluster form. From 2021, the wind farm is expected to supply the first electricity.
