Next US Offshore Wind Project Is Taking Shape

The next US offshore wind farm is to be built off the coast of Maryland. Project developer US Wind has now commissioned JDR Cables for cable works.

A 750 MW offshore wind farm is to be built off the US east coast, according to US wind's wishes. First decisions regarding the infrastructure have now been made: British cable specialist JDR Cables will build the inter-array cabling as well as the export cable.

"JDR Cables is a world-class leader in the industry and just one of many future examples of US Wind's commitment to bring the world's best companies to Maryland," said Riccardo Toto, President of US Wind. "We're interested in putting together a whole new offshore wind industry right here, in Maryland, and bringing JDR here is a big piece of that puzzle."

The project involves almost 200 kilometers of inter-array cables as well as an export cable of app. 180 kilometers which is intended to transport the wind energy to the coast. According to the timetable the cables will be manufactured in 2018 and  moved in the years 2019 and 2020.

US Wind is pursuing ambitious plans: Up to 5,000 new jobs will be created in Maryland and more than $ 16 million will be implemented as part of the project's lifetime.

"We are extremely proud to be selected by US Wind for the full cable package," said David Currie, CEO of JDR Cable Systems. "This partnership will strengthen Maryland and Baltimore as a regional business hub and support additional job creation. We are thrilled to be part of this exciting Maryland project."
