UK: SSE launches ‘SSE Green’ a 100% renewable energy contract for business
SSE Green, provided by SSE Business Energy, is aimed at supporting large industrial and commercial operations in the UK manage their Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG). SSE will supply renewable energy matched to Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origins (REGOs), certifying that the purchased electricity has been generated exclusively through a portfolio of wind and hydro assets.
From October 2013, it has been mandatory for FTSE 100 companies to report their GHG emissions in their annual reports. The latest amendment to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, Scope 2 Guidance was introduced in January 2015 and made changes to the way in which organisations should report their GHG emissions. Carbon management has therefore become an increasing focus for businesses as part of their wider environmental strategy, and organisations are increasingly demanding information about the sources of their energy.
SSE has chosen to exclude Biomass and only match REGOs from wind and hydro assets with SSE Green.
Terry Tippell, SSE’s Director of Business Energy said: “We are delighted to offer this new contract to business customers which allows them to demonstrate their commitment to renewable and sustainable goals, as well as enhancing their environmental reputation and commitment to customers and other stakeholders. Equally, large organisations can benefit greatly by being able to report zero emissions for their purchased electricity.”
Since April 2007 SSE has invested over £4bn in renewable sources of generation with over 2,500MW of wind (onshore and offshore) and Hydro assets in operation with a further 400MW of onshore wind currently in construction. SSE Green will also be supported by REGO’s from other wind and hydro generators.
