Denmark: Two of the world’s most powerful wind turbines in full operation

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has constructed and installed two V164-8.0 MW wind turbines for European Energy A/S acting in a joint venture with a local partner. The installation marks a milestone for MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as the two wind turbines are only the second and third turbines of the record-breaking V164-8.0 MW to be commissioned.

The turbines have been installed on the Danish west coast just south of the city of Esbjerg and each produce enough electricity to power more than 9,000 homes when running at peak capacity. The turbines have a rotor diameter of 164 m and a maximum height of 200m from the foundation to the blade tip.

The Måde project forms part of a test programme that enables MHI Vestas Offshore Wind to test and further enhance the turbines in an offshore-like environment due to the location of the turbines on the shore of the North Sea.Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy which is one of the partners behind the project said: “Our mission is to drive down the price of electricity from wind turbines and solar cells even further. The inauguration of the world’s most powerful wind turbines is a giant leap in that direction.”
