UK: South Wales wind farm development gets underway

Leading civil engineering firm Jones Bros has embarked on the building of a six-turbine wind farm in South Wales that will support apprenticeship opportunities for young people in the area.

The Mynydd Portref project is located between Brynna and Hendreforgan in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is carrying out the project on behalf of client REG Windpower and is expected to take 12 months. The 12MW wind farm is anticipated to generate around 30GWh, per year.

Jones Bros site agent Rhys Roberts (pictured), said: “We have set up our cabins on site and are ready to go. Our work will include laying 3.8 kilometres of site tracks, while contractors will undertake cabling and the construction of a turbine control centre.

“We will also be recruiting apprentices from the local area in the coming weeks as well as providing opportunities for local contractors.”

Existing Jones Bros apprentices currently working on the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project, a joint venture partnership between Jones Bros and Balfour Beatty, will also spend time at Mynydd Portref to develop their skills.

North Wales-based Jones Bros has developed considerable expertise in constructing wind farms in a wide range of terrains.

Founded in the 1950s and employing almost 350 people, Jones Bros has grown rapidly in the last decade.  It is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, flood and marine defence and renewable energy projects around the UK.
