Canada: Senvion celebrates the commercial operation of its largest onshore project: the 350 megawatts Rivière-du-Moulin Wind Farm

Senvion, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of wind turbines, is marking the commercial operation of the Rivière-du-Moulin wind project in Quebec, Canada.

With 175 2 megawatt (MW) turbines totaling 350 MW, the wind project consists of Senvion MM92 and MM82 Cold Climate Version (CCV) type turbines. Several of the turbines are equipped with Senvion de-icing technology, adapted for cold Canadian climate conditions. The Rivière-du-Moulin wind farm is the biggest onshore contract in the history of Senvion and comes as part of the 1 gigawatt framework agreement Senvion signed with developer EDF EN Canada Inc. in 2009.

The project is located in the unorganized territory (UT) Lac Pikauba in the MRC de Charlevoix and the UT of Lac Ministuk in the MRC du Fjord du Saguenay. Rivière-du-Moulin is expected to produce enough electricity to power approximately 77 000 households with clean, renewable energy and will generate a significant amount of economic benefits for the surrounding communities.

Andreas Nauen, CEO at Senvion, said: “Rivière-du-Moulin is yet another achievement for us in 2015. As the largest onshore wind project in our history, Rivière-du-Moulin represents more than a third of our installed capacity in Quebec. This very large wind farm represents a major milestone for Senvion across the globe.”

Helmut Herold, CEO of Senvion in North America, said: “Rivière-du-Moulin is a great example of our regional expertise in action as Senvion managed to complete and deliver the project to commercial operation two weeks ahead of schedule. That is no small feat, considering the territory’s complex terrain and often adverse weather conditions. Its completion is a result of the outstanding efforts by our exceptional workforce on-site as well as in our office, not to mention our local partners. Rivière-du-Moulin illustrates how cooperation between industry partners, governments and communities drives change for cheaper and cleaner energy in Quebec.”

As part of its growing achievements in 2015, Senvion has also become the second largest onshore wind turbine manufacturer in Germany with an installed capacity of 285 MW in the first half of 2015. Globally, Senvion has now installed over 6 100 turbines, providing an output of over 12 GW.
