Report Excerpt - New UK offshore wind speed data published
The data added to the MDE has been collated from several meteorological masts, buoys and LiDAR (remote sensing technology) around the UK, including The Wash, Thames Estuary and the Irish Sea, covering a period from 2002.
The availability of this data follows the publication of the ‘UK MERRA offshore validation’ study last year. The report compared satellite data against offshore mast data, both used to inform investment and design decisions for offshore wind farms. The study highlighted the importance of both on-site wind measurements, as well as the value of using reanalysis data to inform offshore wind farm development.
Ian Pritchard, Energy Asset Portfolio Manager, said: “Gathering detailed and technical information for offshore development can be difficult and expensive. We decided to clean up and catalogue this wind data to create a unique source of information for offshore wind developers and other uses of the Marine Data Exchange. Analysis of this data will help grow wider understanding of this natural resource to inform decision making and reduce future development costs.”
The Marine Data Exchange also provides access to wider environmental survey data and reports collated during the planning, building and operation of offshore renewable energy projects. Recent improvements to its functionality and user experience include a new facility to generate tailored alerts to new content that may be of interest.
