MHI Vestas Offshore Wind appointed preferred supplier for Navitus Bay project in the UK
As soon as the project translates into a firm and unconditional order, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind will disclose further details about this.
CEO Jens Tommerup said,“We are pleased to have been appointed preferred supplier for the Navitus Bay project.”
“We look forward to working together with Navitus Bay Ltd. in order to negotiate the project through the necessary milestones needed to realise the project as a firm and unconditional order.”
“If the project translates into a firm and unconditional order, the 80m blades are planned to be produced locally at our manufacturing facility on the Isle of Wight, providing jobs in the region close to the project,” said Jens Tommerup.
The proposed Navitus Bay project is located off the Dorset and Hampshire coast and to the west of the Isle of Wight. The project could be up to 970 MW using a maximum of 121 turbines, with a mitigation option of 630 MW using a maximum of 78 turbines, subject to development consent.
Built in the UK
Over 200 full time jobs have already been created at MHI Vestas Offshore Wind’s blade production facility on the Isle of Wight, where manufacturing of 80m composite blades for the V164-8.0 MW – the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine is ramping up to serial production.
The decision to manufacture blades on the Isle of Wight was announced in November 2014 and is the first part of a wider industrial strategy in the UK which is expected to result in up to £200m worth of investment and safeguarding or creating up to 800 jobs.
