Inside Canadian Wind: Senvion completes Ontario wind farm projects

“We are glad to see our wind turbines running with locally produced blades and we are looking forward to further deliveries out of our Welland blade manufacturing facility to other Ontario projects”

This past November, Senvion Canada Inc. completed the commissioning of the Springwood and Whittington wind farms in Southern Ontario. These projects, in conjunction with German developer wpd, are Senvion Canada’s second and third wind projects in the province; Oxley being the first, bringing the company’s  footprint in Ontario to 24 MW.

Senvion delivered, installed and commissioned four MM92 CCV type turbines at Springwood and three at Whittington.  All seven turbines have a 100 metre hub height and are specifically adapted to cold climates. The Springwood wind farm is located in the Township of Wellington Centre in Wellington County whereas Whittington is located in the Township of Amaranth in Dufferin County, Ontario. Whittington and Springwood will produce enough power to supply the electricity needs of about 2,300 homes for one year.  Senvion will also provide service and maintenance for 15 years through an Integrated Service Package contract.

Moreover, many of the components were sourced locally, including the blades which are produced by PowerBlades, the Senvion blade facility in Welland, Ontario. In addition, spare parts and service for these projects and further endeavors in Ontario will be managed from the new Senvion Service Centre located in Kitchener.

“We are glad to see our wind turbines running with locally produced blades and we are looking forward to further deliveries out of our Welland blade manufacturing facility to other Ontario projects,” says Helmut Herold, CEO North America of Senvion Canada Inc. Springwood and Whittington are two of the first projects completed out of a contract volume of about 200 MW in Ontario that are still in the renewable energy approval process.
