CanWEA firmly denounces request from the Coalition Avenir Québec

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) firmly denounces the Coalition Avenir Québec’s (CAQ) request to halt further development of Quebec’s wind energy production

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) firmly denounces the Coalition Avenir Québec’s (CAQ) request to halt further development of Quebec’s wind energy production. Such a position runs counter to the very economic development ambitions expressed by the CAQ.

The electricity surplus referred to by the CAQ, represents only 3 per cent of the total supply, according to Mr. Pierre Arcand, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. This margin provides system flexibility and also helps promote Quebec’s economic development. In fact, many projects put forward by the CAQ as part of its Project Saint-Laurent would directly benefit from this small surplus.

Today, Quebecers are reaping the benefits of a long-term vision for electricity development. Without such a vision in the early 1970s, Quebec would never have become the hydropower leader it is now. Quebec’s energy wealth exists because those who came before us planned for the long term and for future generations.

CanWEA notes that wind energy development in Quebec is a success. This industry has created 5,000 well-paying jobs, attracted ten billion dollars in investment and allowed Montréal and the province to develop expertise in what is becoming one of the most widely installed new sources of electricity generation in Canada, the United States and around the world.
