Wind Industry Profile of

Honduras wind farm selects Brüel & Kjær Vibro

Brüel & Kjær Vibro has been selected for the retrofit installation and monitoring of 25 wind turbines (50 MW) at the San Marcos Wind Farm, which are currently in the process of being erected onsite.

The San Marcos wind farm, the second largest wind project in Honduras, is located in the south west portion of the country near the Nicaragua border. Vientos de Electrotecnia (VESA) is responsible for developing the wind farm. VESA is wholly owned by Grupo Terra, which has been actively involved for the past 35 years in investing to modernize the energy sector and infrastructure in Central America.

The all-inclusive monitoring solution to be implemented at San Marcos, hosted by the Brüel & Kjær Vibro Surveillance and Diagnostic Service Centre, is intended to continuously and remotely monitor each wind turbine to automatically detect developing faults early. When a fault is detected, the Brüel & Kjær Vibro analysts will perform diagnosis and analysis and issue actionable alarm reports, in order to optimize operation and maintenance. The monitoring system installation includes the following:

  • All data is stored and maintained at the Brüel & Kjær Vibro Service Centre

  • The VESA installation crew has been certified by Brüel & Kjær Vibro to install the monitoring system hardware

  • Vibration analysis software to be installed at customer’s site so they can visualize monitoring and diagnostics conducted by Brüel & Kjær Vibro

Brüel & Kjær Vibro’s condition-based monitoring solution is expected to significantly lower the life cycle costs of the wind turbines. San Marcos is one of several renewable energy projects in Central America that Grupo Terra is actively involved in, including hydro.
