Klüber Lubrication: Increasing the yield with synthetic gear oils

Long oil change intervals and excellent wear protection for gear teeth and rolling bearings

As the power density in wind turbine gears is increasing, loads and temperatures acting within a confined space are constantly on the rise. Consequently, it is ever harder for the gear oils used to attain service life, load and thermal resistance targets. Further critical issues are resistance to wear and micropitting as well as foam and residue formation. Lubricants that have proven successful in numerous wind power plants around the world are the highly load-resistant, synthetic gear oils of the Klübersynth GEM 4 N series made by Klüber Lubrication.

"Compared to standard oils, these high-performance gear oils from Klüber Lubrication offer high resistance to ageing and loads as well as low friction coefficients," explains Dr. Victor Camargos, Head of Business Unit Wind Energy at Klüber Lubrication. "This enables long oil change and service intervals, and higher plant yield - up to several thousand euros can be saved over the service life of a wind turbine."

The gear oils of the Klübersynth GEM 4 N series offer high resistance to scuffing and micropitting as well as very good wear protection for teeth and rolling bearings. Thanks to the excellent ageing and oxidation resistance of these synthetic oils, they attain a much longer service life than mineral oil-based lubricants. They also show a good viscosity-temperature behaviour, supporting the formation of a sufficient lubricant film even at high temperatures. In addition, they offer excellent anti-foaming characteristics, made possible on the one hand by the raw materials used, which as such have a low tendency to foam, and on the other by highly effective anti-foaming additives. Their wide service temperature range means that in many applications a single viscosity class can be used for both high and low temperatures.
