Wind Industry Profile of

The Business Platform for Wind Energy – New Models Presented & Business Deals Signed in Hamburg

WindEnergy Hamburg – The global on- & offshore expo open until 26 September at the Hamburg Messe fair site

It has been an excellent debut for WindEnergy Hamburg. Two days into the leading international fair of the wind energy industry, numerous exhibitors have already benefited from the opportunity to showcase new products and close major business deals which underscore the importance of WindEnergy Hamburg as a global business platform.

For example, exhibitor Vattenfall Nordic, Europe's leading producer of wind power and heat, and one of the leading onshore and offshore wind farm operators, has placed an order with fellow exhibitor ROMO Wind worth 1.35 m Euro. The order comprises equipment for a total of 69 wind turbines to be erected in Denmark and Sweden. ROMO Wind, a Danish/Swiss company, has developed the iSpin technology which optimises wind power production. Under the contract ROMO Wind will assume full responsibility for continuous measurement and correction of nacelle yaw control errors. ROMR's iSpin technology is used in all of Vattenfall's major offshore wind turbines to minimise significant performance losses while reducing drive train and rotor wear. Vattenfall Nordic expects this technology to deliver a two-per cent production improvement across its wind farms. The iSpin Monitor technology continuously tracks wind speeds and wind direction to determine turbulence intensity.

Innovations and milestones

WindEnergy Hamburg's claim to fame as the global platform for innovation in wind energy is aptly highlighted by exhibitors such as Siemens Wind Power. It was here Siemens chose to unveil its new 3D System SWT-3.3-130 for high power output at low winds. Fitted with 130 metre rotors, these 3.3MW units are designed to deliver the best possible power yield at low to medium wind speeds. The first deliveries are expected in early 2017. Today, Wednesday, fair visitors were able to follow the opening ceremony of Siemens' remote diagnostics centre at Brande, Denmark by live transmission.

Senvion is presenting an extension of its 3MW series at WindEnergy Hamburg. The Senvion 3.4M114, scheduled to go into series production in 2015, has a rated power more than six per cent higher than that of the earlier 3.2M114 model, and promises to generate 4.5 per cent more power. Furthermore, Senvion announced that the installation of its 111th offshore turbine was completed today, Wednesday, a true milestone for the company.  "We have managed to install as many as 19 wind turbines for the Nordsee Ost wind farm within ten weeks. This accomplishment underscores our position as a strong No. 2 contender in the offshore market," said CEO Andreas Nauen in Hamburg.

WindEnergy Hamburg was also the setting for the German Renewables Awards presented by Hamburg's Renewable Energy Cluster on Tuesday evening. Henrik Stiesdal, Chief Technology Officer of Siemens Wind Power, received the award for his lifetime achievements. Stiesdal, who had built his first, small-sized wind turbine as early as 1976, is considered one of the top thought leaders of the global wind energy industry. Friday, 26 September, the last day of WindEnergy Hamburg, will be entirely dedicated to careers in the wind energy industry. During "Recruiting Day", HR representatives from numerous exhibiting companies will inform about the employment, career and training opportunities they offer. Exhibitors in search of experts, career changers or young professionals will present themselves in a special area set-up between Halls B1 and B2, giving brief speeches and highlighting current job openings.
