Elecnor wins a EUR 83 million contract to build a 66 MW wind farm in Jordan, the country's second

Elecnor has secured a EUR 83 million contract to build a 66 MW wind farm in the Jordanian city of Maan.

Elecnor was chosen by Jordan's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) to carry out this project, which includes the engineering, supply and construction of a wind farm with 33 2 MW wind turbines and 78-metre metal towers. The contract also covers operation and maintenance of the farm for two years, as well as  construction of the control building and access roads.

The wind farm will be situated on a plot adjacent to the University Al-Hussein, around 7 km north-east of the city of Maan in southern Jordan. This site is around 125 km from the port of Aqaba and 225 km from Jordan's capital, Amman. The wind farm is slated to come on stream at the start of 2016.

The Maan wind farm, which will be financed with a subsidy from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, is the second wind power project promoted by Jordan. It is part of the Jordanian government's efforts to diversify energy sources and to seek ways to generate clean and safe energy, since the country currently imports 96% of its energy in the form of oil and gas. Under the MEMR's energy plan, renewable energies are expected to account for 10% of energy distribution in 2020, with some 1,200 MW of wind power and 600 MW of solar energy. The transition to renewables in the country requires an outlay estimated at between USD 1,400 and USD 2,200 million.

In wind power, Elecnor both promotes, invests in and manages its own projects and builds facilities for third parties. Elecnor develops its own wind farms through its specialist subsidiary Enerfín, which operates over  1,000 MW in Spain, Brazil and Canada,  while as a third-party builder this contract in Jordan follows the agreement recently struck in Mauritania, where the company is currently working on the country's first wind farm.
